Another frequent question is, ” Can I use a decking paint over Deck Fix Primer?” The answer is no.

We recommend a Solid Latex Decking Stain over DF. That’s right not just a latex house stain, but a solid latex decking stain, designed specifically for a horizontal surface. A solid latex Decking stain (SLDS) is designed to be able to withstand the harsh elements and conditions of a deck.

If you use an oil or latex decking paint, directly on top of DF, you run the risk of the the coating failing. A decking paint is not as flexible as a SLDS and can bubble, crackle and peel.

Decks are a funny animal. They degrade & peel very quickly. Deck Fix is designed to counter the effect of weather conditions and double the average life of your project.

Here’s a basic explaination of how Deck Fix works.

Deck Fix (DF) is thinner bodied primer designed to fully penetrate into the deck surface.

DF will wrap itself over, under, and around all the previous coatings and lock them down.

Because DF fully penetrates and has little film thickness…there is very little to peel off. DF acts as a flexible stabilizing tack coat between the deck and the solid latex decking stain.

DF glues itself to the deck and also glues itself to the top coat.

DF remains Flexible! This allows it to withstand the changes of the seasons from cold to hot and also wet to dry.

DF is also very breathable. This allows moisture to pass thru the coating so it has less chance or peeling and bubbling.

Good Luck , Mad Dog.

Question of the Day from: Ian of Ian Merrill Painting & Home Improvement, Whitman MA. ” I restore a lot of Historical homes in New England. Most projects would involve preparing & priming 90-100% of the surfaces. Too much area to cover just with a brush. MDP is very thick. Can I spray Mad Dog Primer to apply it?”

Answer: Yes, MDP is very Sprayable! Use a larger airless sprayer and experiment with tips ranging from 15 to 21 to get the spray pattern you need. Just remember to back brush or roll in the primer. Just spraying MDP is only 33% of the job. MDP and all coatings work best when there is a mechanical action pushing the primer into, around, and on top of the substrate.

Good Luck, Mad Dog

Lately I have been receiving many questions from contractors, stores, and building owners whether they can use 100% latex solid stain over Mad Dog Primer? (This is only an example for Mad Dog Primer and not our other product Deck Fix). Both products will work well. My recommendation is to use a Latex Paint. Here’s Why:

Stains are a thinner product designed to penetrate into the surface of the substrate. If a primer is used…the stain can’t penetrate into the wood. So, the stain can’t do what it is designed to do.

I normally suggest a flat or matte finish paint that will simulate the look of at stain. The grain will still show thru in most cases.

Also, I have never met a customer or contractor who can walk up to a building and tell me with certainty…whether solid latex stain or a paint was used.

Most stains are warrantied for 8 years when you apply 2 coats.

Most decent paints have a warranty of 10-20 years, when 2 coats are applied.

The numbers speak for themselves.

In most cases a paint topcoat will last longer than a stain topcoat.

Good Luck, Mad Dog.
